Differences between the original Voltron series and V3D

One of the main differences is that V3D is not Arus-based. In the original Voltron series, Almost all of the episodes had something to do with Planet Arus, whether it be protecting Arus or at least 30% of the episode being based on Arus. In V3D, The episodes have very little to do with Planet Arus. The Voltron Force blasts off from Arus to help Galaxy Garrison defeat Lotor, leaving just about the call for help and the blast-off sequence based on Arus.

Another difference is the Voltron Force's attire. In the original series, when the VF weren't piloting the lions, they were always wearing their casual clothes. In V3D, only the Princess has been seen wearing something other than her uniform. Maybe the animators aren't even going to make the attempt to recreate the VF's casual clothing from the original series...

A third difference is the blast-off sequence. Instead of the control panel of the control room rising to reveal the elevators to the lions, the VF instead run to a place in the castle which is not defined, and hop into pods which take them to the lions. Also, when the lions blast off, there is a difference. In the forest, green lion's hiding place has changed a little. Instead of him blasting out the side of a log, he blasts out of the top. Red lion, instead of blasting out of a cavern in the volcano, blasts out of the lava itself to join the rest of the VF. Black lion has changed as well! In the original series, Black lion is black lion and blasts off from the pedastool. In V3D, black lion always reverts back to statue form, and has to change back to black lion before he leaves the pedastool. Another thing, have you noticed that the keys to activate the lions have changed?

A fourth, less noticeable difference, is that Princess Allura has become the central figure of the VF. In the original series, Keith was the central figure, and the VF obeyed his orders. In V3D, both Keith and Allura give the orders, but Allura is still the central figure of the VF because of her ability to understand the lions. She also has a few more gizmos to help her, like the Lion Claw.

The fifth difference is that of the total lack of other characters in V3D. in the original series, you had the space mice, blue cat, nanny, the arusians and the people on other planets to provide some comic relief for the series. In V3D, the mice, blue cat, nanny, and the arusians have all mystically disappeared. No one but those really close to WEP knows why this is, but I think it's because V3D was made to appeal to the original voltron fans. Since the fans of the original show have grown up, V3D is a bit more serious and has plots which make you think.

Now this one I like quite a bit. The action in V3D is much more believable than in the original series. If something blew up near something else, nothing happened in the original Voltron series. In V3D however, that same explosion would have an effect on things around it. If red lion was close to an explosion, it would be pushed away from the explosion. This is something which I applaud the animators for.

Notice how in the original series, there were quite a number of animation glitches? Stuff like the lions being colored wrong or the voices sounded a little screwy? Looking back on it now, they also added to the fun of the show. In V3D, I have noticed only one glitch, and that's in "The VF strikes back". If you look when Voltron forms the blazing sword, red and green lions are reversed! Red lion is on the left arm, and the blazing sword is formed in his mouth. Does this mean Voltron is ambidextrous? The V3D people have kept a close eye out for these glitches, and probably have removed quite a number of them from V3D.

A ninth difference is that of the VF's arsenal. The lions in V3D have a much bigger arsenal of weapons at their disposal than in the original series. Voltron, too, has a number of new weapons. Some have been added in V3D, and some of the ones in the original series have been "removed". Voltron has yet to use the freeze beam or the argon forcefield in V3D. Will they ever return? Who knows?

Overall, a lot of things have changed between the original Voltron series and V3D. A lot of little things have been taken out or missed, and a few have been put in. Overall the change has been good, but I really miss the stuff they took out...
